Trip Overview of Kanchenjunga (GOECHALA) Trek

Goechala is one of the most classical routes in Himalayas.
The magnificent Kanchenjunga dominates the beautiful valley you walk through on the way to the Goechala viewpoint.The entire trekking is spectacular: you walk up from the tropical jungle above Yuksom, to the glaciers at almost 5.000 meters.

The Goechala pass you reach is an awesome, beautiful viewpoint at the heart of Himalaya, in front of Kanchenjunga. The trekking itinerary is the following, but it’s important to remember, it can also be modified according to everyone’s needs and level of experience.

Detail itinerary of Kanchenjunga (GOECHALA) Trek

  • DAY 1

    BAGDOGRA-OR BHADRAPUR (NEPAL ) AIRPORT -GANGTOK (Alt. 1870 m)

    Arrival at the airport and meet assistance at the airport and take a scenic drive to Gangtok (Capital of Sikkim) , lunch will be served on the way at good restaurant. In the evening visit the local market, around M.G. Marg. (Litter free Zone) and Lal market. Overnight at hotel.

  • DAY 2

    GANGTOK (SIGHTSEEING)

    Early morning visit to Tashi View Point, Ganesh Tok (Temple) and Hanuman Tok (Temple). After Breakfast drive to Rumtek Monastery built in 1740 on the way back visit Lingdum monastery(Its a newly built monastery by His Holiness the 12th Garwang Rimpoche), also visit a newly built amusement park named Ban Jhakri Falls. Overnight stay in a hotel.

  • DAY 3

    GANGTOK- YUKSUM (Alt. 1760 m)

    Drive form Gangtok to Yuksom Time taken 6 hrs on the way visit Bonn monastery near Ravongla. Overnight stay in a hotel.

  • DAY 4

    YUKSUM - TSHOKA (Alt. 3050 m)

    Trek from Yuksom to Tshoka 18 kms time taken approx. 6 hrs. Walk through dense forest of pine and oak. After crossing river Prek Chu it is straight 70 degree uphill climb, this is the toughest stage in the entire Treks, then we reach Bakhim. The trail from Bakhim passes through magnolia and Rhododendron trees to Tshoka. Tshoka is a small village. Overnight stay in a tent or lodge.

  • DAY 5

    TSHOKA- DZONGRI (Alt. 4020 m)

    Trek from Tshoka to Dzongri is still a steep climb taking approx 5hrs. This leads us through dense forest of Rhododendrons. There are over 400 flowering species of Rhododendrons in Sikkim. Once we reach Phedang we take a break. After a steep climbing from Phedang we reach a place called Deorali Dara from where one can experience the magnificent view of the mountains. After a short climb from Deorali we reach Dzongri, here the vegetation is thin and only small bushes and shrubs are found. A tourist hut is available for the night stay. Overnight stay in hut or in a tent.

  • DAY 6

    ACCLIMATIZATION

    Early morning walk up hill to Dzongri hill top for a sunrise in the entire mountain range including the third highest peak in the world the mighty Khanchendzonga. After breakfast a short walk to Lake Kabur Lam Chu and Dzongri la pass. Overnight stay in the tent or hut.

  • DAY 7

    DZONGRI - THANSING (Alt. 3930 m)

    Trek from Dzongri to Thangshing takes about approx 4hrs after walking through the bushes and hedges. At first its like walking in the plain table land after few hours we rapidly descend down to river Prek Chu. On the way one can view almost all the mountain ranges Mt Pandim, Mt. Jupuno, Mt. Tinchenkhang. After a short walk uphill from Prek Chu we will reach Thangshing. Overnight stay in a tent.

  • DAY 8

    THANSING- SAMITI ( Alt. 4200 m)

    Trek from Thangshing to Samiti Lake takes about approx 3hrs its just a easy trek through thin vegetation. Overnight stay in a tent. Samiti is basically, in the base of mount Pandim because of its close attachment. With Mt Pandim here a small beautiful lake has emerged. When it gets snowed the lake with the mountain. Provides a spectacular unforgettable view. Over night in tent.

  • DAY 9

    SAMITI - GOECHALA (Alt 4940 m) SAMITI

    Trek from Samiti to Goechala back to Samiti takes about approx 7 hrs, the trek starts with easy grading. We come across Zemathang which means ( sand- plain land) the trail goes through moraines before reaching Goechala one can view green lake formed right below the path deep down the hill, finally one reaches the second viewpoint from here one can view southern phase of Khanchendzonga. Further trek takes you to Yangitaar to spent one night in this place is worthwhile one can witness avalanche of Mt Khanchendzonga this place is recommendable because it is quite different than other entire trek, but during winter it is not possible due to thick snow which covers the path and makes it difficult to walk.

  • DAY 10

    SAMITI -KUKCHORUNG (Alt 3000 m)

    Trek from Samiti to Kukchurung takes about 3hrs spent. Overnight stay in lodge.

  • DAY 11

    KUKCHORUNG TSHOKA

    Trek from Kukchurung to Tshoka takes about 5 hrs is gradual descending through thick forest it's a long and Tiring walk this route joins the route of Phedang to Dzongri trail. Overnight stay in a tent.

  • DAY 12

    TSHOKA- YUKSUM

    The trek from Tshoka to Yuksom takes about 6hrs. Overnight stay in a hotel. Trek Ends.

  • DAY 13

    YUKSAM KHEOCHEPALRI LAKE PELLING

    After breakfast scenic drive to Khecheopalri Lake, one of the most beautiful Lakes in Sikkim, Spending some hours here in Khecheopalri Lake we move on to Pelling. Lunch will be served on the way in a good restaurant. On the way, visit to Pemayangtse Monastery and Rabdentse Ruins. Over night stay in Hotel.

  • DAY 14

    PELLING BHADRAPUR

    After Break Fast Drive to kakarvita about 5hours and after immigration formalities transfer to Bhadrapur airport and fly back to kathmandu .Over night at hotel(own arrangement)
