Tibet Overland Tour: Drive-In, Drive-Out

Overview:

A Tibet Overland Tour is a journey that combines the thrill of driving through the Tibetan Plateau’s remote areas with the chance to see some of Tibet’s most iconic landmarks. The drive-in, drive-out format means you’ll enter Tibet by road (usually from Nepal or China) and depart via the same route, making the journey even more rewarding with diverse scenic experiences.

Highlights of the Overland Tour:

  1. Lhasa – The Spiritual Heart of Tibet: Your journey begins in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, which offers an abundance of historic and cultural experiences such as the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street. Lhasa’s elevated location at 3,650 meters requires acclimatization, so expect a slower start to allow your body to adjust to the altitude.
  2. Scenic Drives Across Tibet: The overland route takes you through stunning high-altitude roads, with winding mountain paths, vast grasslands, and shimmering lakes like Yamdrok Lake. Along the way, you’ll get a sense of the rugged terrain that makes Tibet so unique.
  3. Ancient Monasteries: Tibet’s monasteries are not just religious centers, but also architectural masterpieces. During your journey, you’ll visit sacred sites like Sera Monastery, Drepung Monastery, Tashilhunpo Monastery, and Pelkor Chode Monastery. These monasteries offer a window into the spiritual heart of Tibet and its vibrant culture.
  4. Tibetan Villages and Nomadic Life: As you drive through small Tibetan villages, you will have a chance to witness traditional Tibetan life. Nomadic herders, yak caravans, and traditional Tibetan homes dot the landscape, providing insight into life on the Plateau.
  5. Yamdrok Lake: En route to Gyantse or Shigatse, you will pass Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s three holy lakes. Its turquoise waters surrounded by snow-capped mountains create an ethereal atmosphere.
